 Bachelor in International Relations

The course provides the fundamental instruments for preparing students to work in International Organisations, enter Diplomatic Services, International Relations Departments of Ministries and other public and private bodies, or International Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, Financial Institutions or embrace the academic career. It is a multidisciplinary, comprehensive and eclectic programme, which combines and blends a rich curriculum with quality of teaching allowing for the development of a versatile and competitive profile for the performance of duties, such as, inter alia, coordinate international relations offices; plan, organise and evaluate projects of companies' internationalisation; analyse and manage political decision-making processes; engage in diplomacy and negotiation in international multicultural settings​.​​

AIn addition to obtaining a positive grade in the project component, the conclusion of the Curricular Unit (UC) "Project" implies cumulatively, the verification of the following requirements:
(1) compliance with 3 ECTS in the EEGenerating Skills programme;
(2) compliance with the Data Analysis Requirement;
(3) compliance with the Internationalisation Requirement.

Description


The Bachelor degree is a teaching project founded in the scientific area of Political Science and International Relations, but with an interdisciplinary matrix covering the areas of History, Economics, Law and Languages. As part of the restructuring of Bologna, the course was designed to meet the creation of a European higher education area, so one of the main features of the first cycle curriculum is its multifaceted and flexible character (flexibility defined as the labor market), which allows students to choose their own specialization. The semester teaching is fundamentally theoretical and practical, being organized in credit units. The learning methodologies focus on the student, who has an active role in their training and skills development, promoting autonomy, the spirit of continuous pursuit of knowledge and development of qualifications. The course is characterized by a strong dynamism translated into a set of extracurricular activities credited in Diploma Supplement, which complements the theoretical and practical training and prepares a successful integration in the active life. The course focuses on the activities carried out by the members of the Center for Political Science Research, rated 'Excellent' by the FCT, as well as on the initiatives developed by CECRI, which brings together both training students in the area and their graduates.

Key learning outcomes


1. Provide general, specific and transversal competences in the field of International Relations for a multidimensional understanding of the international political phenomenon;
2. Provide a solid and multidisciplinary training in the scientific area of International Relations, covering the fields of Political Science, Economics, Law, Philosophy, Languages and Cultures;
3. To enable professionals to serve in international organizations, the institutions of the European Union, the diplomatic career, the external interface departments of private companies, the international relations departments and advisory offices of ministries and other public bodies and non-governmental organizations;
4. Provide the necessary foundations for a professional career in the fields of teaching and research in the scientific area of International Relations;
5. Develop a critical consciousness of the challenges facing the international system.

Access to higher education


The Bachelor degree in International Relations is part of the first cycle of the Bologna Process and continues at the University of Minho, in the second cycle in the same scientific area, corresponding to the Master in International Relations and, in the third cycle, the Doctorate in Political Science and International Relations.

Careers


The Bachelor degree in International Relations aims to qualify of graduates to perform various functions in the fields of diplomacy, intergovernmental (including European Union institutions) and non-governmental organizations, international relations offices and advice from ministries, chambers municipalities and other public bodies. These functions also include exercising external interface positions with private companies, banks and other financial institutions. The degree also allows the pursuit of academic and research career.
