Description


The Master in Social Economics aims to attract students with a strong background in Economics and other Social Sciences, who are looking to become specialists in the area of Social Economy and develop knowledge and skills in the analysis of social problems from an economic perspective. It also attracts professionals working in the social sector.
Masters in Social Economics will thus hold technical skills to identify social problems, propose and implement answers to those problems, in diverse contexts, both institutionally and geographically. They will also have technical and analytical skills that will enable them to autonomously develop a critical and grounded reflection at the theoretical and practical levels that contribute to the definition of alternative and complementary innovative strategies that sticulate economic development. Finally, graduates in Social Economics will develop a set of transferable skills that allows them to adapt to different contexts,and get involved constructively and fully in their professional activities in this and related areas.

Key learning outcomes


1. To contribute to the advanced education of human resources in the area of Social Economics;
2. To promote the career development in the Social Economy and the Third Sector Potenciar through the deeper understanding of its functioning;
3. To promote a critical thinking in the formulation and resolution of social problems, while adopting the approach and methodology of the Economic science;
4. To enable students to integrate knowledge and study the complex issues that arise from the identification and search for solutions to social problems;
5. To stimulate knowledge and skills to conduct basic independent research projects in Social Economics, guided by theoretical objectives or towards the resolution of practical problems;
6. To promote the potential for innovation through an advanced human capital formation and dissemination of research results to the Social Economy, the Third Sector and to society at large.

Access to higher education


The master in Social Economics provides students with the adequate background to pursue PhD studies in the area of Social Sciences.

Careers


The main career opportunities are found in public and private institutions connected to the Third Sector, both at local and central levels. The skills acquired aill also enable students to consider the possibility of develop their own projects, either during the second year of the programme in the Project course unit, or after graduation.

Formal requirements


Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in Economics, Public Administration, Management, International Business, International Relations, Sociology, Education or related areas. Preference is given to candidates with degrees in the scientific areas of Economics, Management and Political Science.
Proficiency in the Portuguese language. A Portuguese language proficiency certificate is required for candidates from countries where Portuguese is not an official language. The steering committees may request an interview to assess language proficiency.
