UMinho's
School of Economics and Management honoured its Professor, Margarida Proença,
with a Retirement Ceremony that took place on December 3rd, 2021, at EEG. The
Jubilation included a lecture given by Professor Margarida Proença entitled
"Globalisation: New Challenges".
Margarida
Proença completed an academic career punctuated with professional experiences
in foreign universities, namely in the United States of America, where she
obtained her PhD, and in Macau. The Professor and economist confessed that “it
was an enormous privilege to have been in EEG and to look at how this School has
grown." She joined the University of Minho in 1979, where she took her
aggregation exams in 1994 and was promoted to Full Professor one year later.
She
held the position of Vice-Rector and was the School of Economics and
Management's Dean in two mandates, from 1996 to 1999 and from 2006 to 2009.
In her
last lesson, Margarida Proença confessed feeling as if it was the first lesson
she gave, in 1975, at ISCTE, and declared that her generation “was the one that
took Portugal from the 19th century to the 21st century," and assisted
crucial moments such as the women's emancipation, confessing that “she was the
only girl going to high school in Castelo Branco," when Alcains, her
hometown, had five thousand inhabitants and five primary schools.
The
Retirement Ceremony included the intervention of the School of Economics and
Management's Dean, Cláudia Simões, who highlighted the contribution of
Professor Margarida Proença in the growth phase of the School and later, in the
period of its internationalization. The session additionally counted with the
intervention of the EEG's Department of Economics Director, Luís Aguiar
Conraria, who stated that Margarida Proença "is part of the collective of
Excellence that made this School." Paula Veiga, Professor of the Department
of Economics, former scholar and colleague, defined Margarida Proença as “an
immensely good and generous person, with a career built in public
service."
Before
addressing the subject of her lecture, Margarida Proença heard from her
colleagues: “This School is yours."
EEG
wishes all the best to Margarida Proença!
