On February 26, 2024, the School of Economics and Management (EEG) hosted the Round Table on "Northern Portugal and Galicia - Between Ambition and Forgetting the Economy", a joint initiative of the School of Economics and Management and the Northern Regional Delegation of the Order of Economists.
The Round Table featured speeches by Carmen Sánchez from the University of Santiago de Compostela and Carlos Alves from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, with moderation by Paulo Mourão, Researcher at the Economic and Business Policies Research Center and Professor in the Economics Department at EEG.
"Portugal is not condemned to be one of the poorest countries in Europe. It does need to have the ambition to grow and to debate and shape policies in order to grow," said Carlos Alves. On the subject of regionalization, Carmen Sanchez noted that "many of the problems Galicia faces are common to those in the north of Portugal, especially the issue of demographics, the difficulty in retaining young people and avoiding the flight of talent" and said that "to be a Euroregion we need a common strategic vision, to know together where we want to go".
The initiative was part of EEG's Transversal Skills Development Program (EEGenerating Skills).
