Inaugural Class of EEG's PhD Programmes

The School of Economics and Management of the University of Minho is hosting Ricardo Reis for the inaugural lecture of the EEG Doctoral Programs, on the theme “Studying how people form expectations: the credibility revolution”. The class will take place on October 3, 2024, is open to all students of this EEG study cycle and will be attended by Luís Aguiar-Conraria, President of EEG, at the opening session.

Ricardo Reis is A.W. Phillips Professor of Economics at the LSE. He has been elected a member of the British Academy, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and the Econometric Society. His most recent awards include the Carl Menger Prize for 2022 and the Yrjö Jahnsson Medal for 2021. He is also an academic advisor to the Bank of England, the Riksbank, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and the European Stability Mechanism, as well as an advisor to various organizations. He has published widely in the field of macroeconomics, including monetary and fiscal policies, inflation and business cycles. Ricardo Reis holds a PhD in economics from Harvard University and previously taught at Columbia and Princeton universities.

Short abstract: This talk will describe the evolution of research that over the past 25 years has used survey data to understand how people form expectations. Mimicking developments in other topics in economics and other fields in the social sciences, this work has involved a focus on devising strategies to identify key mechanisms. The lecture will show how different findings fit into a coherent view of how people form expectations. It will then apply this view to inform the debate on what was behind the rise and fall of inflation in 2021-24.

The EEG welcomes all the new students who will be attending its PhD Programmes.
