The best high school students from various schools in the
country participated in a programme of contact with teachers and researchers of
the School of Economics and Management (EEG). The initiative provides
information about our educational offer and research so they understand the
prospects of their future academic career. The objective is these youths can
not only shed light on their all doubts about our bachelor programmes but also
know examples of scientific activity realised within EEG. For example, we have
addressed in-depth topics like "Business Productivity and Green and
Sustainable Finance", "When Equality is still unequal: Political
Representation of Women in Municipalities".
The event, organised by the University of Minho's Rectory along with its
Teaching and Research Organic Units, was convened on 22, 23 and 24 of March
2021. The School of Economics and Management (EEG) hosted more than a hundred
youths online.
The President of the Pedagogical Council
of EEG, Professor Maria do Céu Pinto Arena considers that the Best Student
initiative at UMinho is fundamental for EEG as a centre of education, creation
and valuation of knowledge that aims to attract the best high school students
in the core areas of its bachelor programmes. "The School is interested in
expanding the attractiveness of its students beyond a regional base, so the
initiative aims to show how the School offers a high-quality faculty and
courses with an updated curriculum, able
to prepare potential candidates for a successful professional career", she
says. The School's Research Centres are fully involved in the production of
research that is relevant to teaching, as well as to the projection of the
School at the national and international level.
The programme consisted of 90-minute-long sessions online,
always from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Participants came from 58 educational
establishments in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real,
Aveiro, Bragança, Lisbon, Leiria, Viseu, Castelo Branco and Madeira.
Catarina Azevedo, an 11th-year student, currently attending
the Dr. Joaquim de Carvalho Secondary School, Figueira da Foz, was very happy
to participate in this EEG activity. She said "all topics have been addressed
clearly", adding that she is now sure that this experience will be very
enriching and decisive for her to decide about her academic future.
Ana Vale, a 12th-year student at the Madeira Primary and
Secondary School, mentioned this was a very enlightening experience, an added
value in her choice of the bachelor she intends to pursue, and this is due to
the "quality of interventions of EEG faculty and researchers" who unfolded
several realities she deems essential for a successful academic and professional
career.
The programme "The
Best Student at UMinho" seeks to bring the academy closer to the
younger ones, encouraging them to do quality higher education and
state-of-the-art research, in addition to raising awareness among the community
in general of the knowledge produced at this university.
Thank all those who
participated. We look forward to having you part of our big community!
