Izzat Ramadan, an alumnus of the School
of Economics and Management and researcher at the Centre for Research in
Economics and Management (NIPE) of EEG|UMinho, was awarded the António Simões
Lopes 2020 Prize by the Economists'
Association and PwC, which distinguishes the best doctoral thesis presented at
Portuguese universities. This distinction was delivered during the 9th National
Congress of Economists, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon.
The awarded work, entitled "Three
essays on financial literacy and financial behaviour," concerns the thesis
defended in his PhD in Business Administration, carried out at the School of
Economics and Management, which was supervised by Manuel Rocha Armada and
Cristiana Leal, professors of the EEG's Department of Management.
Izzat Ramadan's thesis presents three
studies on financial literacy and behaviour. In these studies, it is revealed
that there are positive effects when these two variables come together, and it
is suggested the creation of public policies and financial education plans for
different groups, taking into consideration gender, country, religion, family
structure, and psychological profile of the citizen, to improve their
performance. The thesis also explicates that the financial behaviour of a
particular person has financial literacy as its principal determinant, which,
however, depends on financial socialisation with parents, confidence, risk
aversion, among other aspects.
Izzat
Ramadan says he is proud and happy for this new achievement and the recognition
of his "ideas about the effect of culture on financial behaviour, such as
the influence of parents in this area," adding that he intends to
investigate this topic in more detail in other parts of the planet.
