Centésima Página | Avenida Central | Braga, 18h30
Pedro Tereso Magalhães, professor in the
Department of Political Science at the School of Economics and Management of
the University of Minho (EEG) and researcher at the CICP, is presenting his
book “Modernity and Democracy” on April 30, 2024, at the Centésima Página
bookshop, at Avenida Central, 118, in Braga.
The book “Modernity and Democracy” offers
an in-depth look at the historical and philosophical evolution of democracy,
highlighting the entry of the masses into the political sphere as one of the
hallmarks of modernity. Addressing the break with the tradition of civic
restraint and political immobilism, the book examines the process that
gradually and revolutionarily transformed the very definition of the political
community.
The presentation will be attended by the
author of the book and also by Professor Diogo Pires Aurélio, from the
Institute of Philosophy at the University of Porto, and Professor João Cardoso
Rosas, from the Center for the Study of Ethics, Politics and Society at the
University of Minho.
Book synopsis
The entry of the masses into the political
arena is a milestone of modernity. Breaking with centuries of civic restriction
and political immobilism, in a process that was as gradual as it was
revolutionary, modern democracy redefined the nature and justification of the
political community. Max Weber, Carl Schmitt and Hans Kelsen thought about this
transformation in troubled times, in the ashes of old empires and in the
antechamber of the totalitarianisms of the 20th century. Nearly a century
later, this book revisits their ideas in order to understand the richness and
ambiguity of modern democratic thinking.
