UMinho's School of Economics, Management and Political Science reinforces its commitment to sustainability and social inclusion

The School of Economics, Management and Political Science (EEG/UMinho) has reinforced its commitment to sustainability and social inclusion as part of its welcome for new 1st cycle students.

The purchase of more than 1,300 reused patchwork fabric bags represents an important step forward in our environmental and social responsibility strategy, with a notable impact on various indicators:

Environmental Impact
By opting for recycled materials, EEG makes a significant contribution to preserving the environment. A total of 206.20kg of fabric was reused, including a beige canvas which, due to packaging problems, was destined for destruction. The reintroduction of this fabric into the value chain demonstrates EEG's commitment to sustainability, transforming textile waste into functional and durable products.

Social Impact
The items were made by social partners, including inmates from Guimarães Prison, a Syrian refugee couple in Braga, and a local social cause that supports a mother with three children, one of whom is severely disabled. The amount paid to these social partners represents 31 per cent of the total amount contracted. This collaboration not only supports social inclusion, but also promotes the development of valuable skills and increased self-esteem for those involved.

Pedagogy for Change
Included as part of its mission, this sustainable action has the potential to raise awareness in the community of the importance of changing behaviour in relation to consumption and waste. The initiative reinforces the message of optimising resources and the institution's commitment to sustainable practices.

- Sustainability: The bags and wristbands are made from reused materials from the Portuguese textile industry, promoting the circular economy and reducing the ecological footprint.

- Unique Design: Each bag is unique, reflecting the care and dedication of the social partners involved and the creative reuse of materials. - Resistance: The bags are designed to ensure durability and functionality, serving as an effective vehicle for promoting the EEG/UMinho brand.

- Social Impact: By choosing re.store® products, customers support social inclusion and help promote the reintegration of prisoners and refugees.

- Valuing the Difference: The bag patchwork initiative, inspired by a prisoner, demonstrates the value of creativity and the commitment of our social partners.

We thank re.store for being a partner committed to good sustainability and social inclusion practices. Together, we have transformed textile waste into functional and unique products for the EEG/UMinho community.
