The Research Centre in Political Science organises itself into four distinct research groups: (i) Administrative Sciences and Public Policies; (ii) Governance and Democracy; (iii) States, International Organisations and Contemporary International Relations Challenges; (iv) Society, Europe and Global Dynamics. It currently ranks Excellent in the field of Political Science by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

The Centre for Research in Economics and Management is organised into five research areas: (i) Political Economy and Macroeconomics; (ii) Industrial, Regional and Environmental Economics; (iii) Labour Economics and Quantitative Methods; (iv) Finance and (v) Management. NIPE ranks second among the Portuguese Research Centres in Economics, with a grade of Very Good in the last evaluation performed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
