The recruitment and selection of people as a Human Resource Management practice has been changing during the last several years. The use of digital technologies has increased, making this type of processes increasingly done remotely where every detail matters.
In online contexts, these moments can be perceived and / or felt as more impersonal being a challenge for both parties: for those looking for work and for those looking for talent.
João Leite Ribeiro, Professor in the Management Department at the School of Economics and Management at the University of Minho and a member of CICS.NOVA, in an interview with Notícias Magazine, also mentioned that information and preparation are two strategies that both recruiters and job seekers can and should use. He argues that online interviews have intensified with the pandemic, "acting as an accelerator of what was already happening". For the professor of Human Resources Management at EEG, the pandemic accelerated technology, intensified the use of digital tools, remote work, interviews through digital platforms, online tests and assessments - all these are no longer strange processes ”. Both parties acknowledge that online has led to time savings and cost savings at this level.
People are facing a different world, care must be taken in an online interview, the space, the lighting, the background, the image quality, the network, and more. For João Ribeiro, all these environments are key in the preparation for an interview. It is important to get to know the organization well, its vision and mission, principles and values as well as, “see the market image that the organization wants to give. Read praise and criticism. Go beyond the business trend. The interviews also look for people who go beyond algorithms, beyond numbers, beyond results ”.
Online job interviews are increasingly present in companies and new generations have mastered these virtual environments very well. Digital technologies are here to stay. It is necessary to prepare the entire virtual space for a job interview, technology, sound, light, image quality, rehearsing in front of the mirror, clothes as if you are going to be in a face-to-face interview, the timbre and tone of voice, the punctuality, being prepared for what may arise, knowing the organization and function well, preparing to answer questions such as what skills you developed during the pandemic and confinements, knowing how to communicate with a computer in front. “Those who recruit have more agile, fast and interactive mechanisms to advertise what they are looking for”, says João Ribeiro.
The digital is really here to stay and it was not a thing from March 2020. Online recruitment and selection is no longer an option and has become an alternative where each party must prepare, be informed, be trained and defining contingency plans to address the tough and changing labor market.
