The School of Economics and Management of the University of Minho (EEG) is proud to announce that Liliana Raquel dos Santos Fernandes, PhD student in Political Science and International Relations, defended her doctoral thesis entitled "Women in the 'New Turkey (2007-2022): experiences of (political) citizenship and the (gender) regime." on July 4, 2024.

According to the abstract presented by the student, the study highlights the dynamics between opposition to gender equality and the processes of de-democratization of political regimes. Based on the Turkish case study, the research identifies the main areas of intervention for the promotion of gender equality in the country and presents the implications of public (political-economic) under-representation for women's heteronomy.

The results highlight the positive correlation between the weakening of democracy and opposition to gender equality and identify the obstacles of domesticity to the promotion of gender equality. In addition, the study looks at the role of economic dependence in the study of domestic violence and produces an alternative interpretation of political action that can be extended to contexts that share the typology of the political regime.

The doctoral thesis was supervised by Isabel Estrada Carvalhais, Associate Professor in EEG's Political Science department.

The EEG congratulates Liliana Raquel dos Santos Fernandes on her defense and wishes her every professional and personal success.
