Between April 16 and 18, 2024, the city of
Porto hosted the Regional Forum of the International Social Security
Association (ISSA), a meeting marked by the discussion of critical issues in
the area of social security.
Professor Sílvia
Sousa, from the Economics Department of the School of Economics and
Management at the University of Minho (EEG), took part in the plenary session
dedicated to the social security system in Portugal.
The session, which took place on April 16,
brought together experts from different backgrounds - academic, technical and
political - to discuss the successes and challenges faced by the Portuguese
social security system.
Known for her work and research in the
area, the lecturer shared valuable insights into the evolution of social
policies and their impact on the population with a reflection on the
achievements and challenges of our social security system, bringing together
interlocutors with different and complementary experiences (academic,
technical, political and implementation of policy measures).
Sílvia Sousa is an assistant professor at
the Economics Department, University of Minho and a researcher at NIPE,
Economic Policies Research Unit. She holds a PhD in Economics from the European
University Institute, Florence. Her research interests are in the intersection
of Labour and Health Economics. She has participated in research projects
financed by FCT and POAT/QREN and developed consulting work for national
organizations. She was an advisor of the Minister of Labour and Social
Solidarity and a member of the Policy Advisory Board of the EU-FP/ project
Multilinks. Until 2017, she was a member of the Portuguese Association of
Health Economics (APES) direction and of the UMinhoExec executive team.
