80 years of the UN
The School of Economics, Management and Political Science at the University of Minho hosted the session ‘80 years of the UN: assessment, structural challenges and the future of multilateralism’, an initiative organised by the Centre for International Relations Studies (CECRI) as part of its 42nd anniversary celebrations.

The session marked eight decades of the United Nations' existence, promoting critical reflection on the organisation's history, its main structural challenges and the prospects for the future of multilateralism, in an international context marked by profound political, economic and geostrategic transformations.

The initiative was attended by Pedro Braga Carvalho, a lawyer specialising in Public Law and European Union Law, lecturer in Public International Law, International Legal Regimes and Fundamental Rights, and PhD student in Law at the Porto School of Law of the Portuguese Catholic University, and Pedro Ponte e Sousa, lecturer in Political Science and International Relations at Universidade Portucalense and researcher at the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI), PhD student in Globalisation Studies at NOVA FCSH.

Throughout the session, topics such as the role of the UN in maintaining international peace and security, the limits and potential of the multilateral system, and the challenges posed to global governance in the 21st century were discussed, contributing to the deepening of academic debate and critical reflection by students on the relevance of international institutions in the contemporary world.
