EEG discussed the state of poverty in Portugal
The School of Economics, Management, and Political Science at the University of Minho hosted the session “EEGConnect: A Portrait of Poverty in Portugal: What Do the Indicators Tell Us (and What Do They Not Tell Us)?”, held on March 13, 2026, in the dst Auditorium, featuring sociologist Elizabeth Santos, who specializes in the analysis of poverty in Portugal and the role of statistical indicators in understanding this phenomenon.

Organized as part of the Social Economy Conference, the session addressed how the indicators used to measure poverty help characterize the country’s social reality, as well as the limitations they present in analyzing the various dimensions of social exclusion.

Elizabeth Santos, who holds a degree in Sociology from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra, has been a staff member and researcher at EAPN Portugal – European Anti-Poverty Network since 2003. Throughout her career, she has participated in various studies and projects on poverty and social exclusion, including topics such as extreme poverty, active inclusion, minimum income, and migration. Since 2018, she has been part of the founding team of the National Observatory on the Fight Against Poverty, currently coordinating the Research and Observatories Unit at EAPN Portugal.

The initiative provided a space for reflection and debate, contributing to a more in-depth analysis of the challenges associated with poverty in Portugal and how it is measured and interpreted.
