The School of Economics, Management, and Political Science at the University of Minho is hosting the event “In Conversation with Hélène Farnaud-Defromont, French Ambassador to Portugal: The Challenges of Diplomacy in the Age of Predators,” to be held on March 26, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., in the dst Auditorium.
The initiative is part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the University of Minho’s Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations.
The session will feature Hélène Farnaud-Defromont, French Ambassador to Portugal since August 2022, and a career diplomat with a distinguished track record on the international stage. She began her career in the Directorate of Strategic Affairs and Disarmament, later serving as an advisor to the French Prime Minister and chief of staff to the Minister of State for International Development.
Before taking up her post in Portugal, she served as France’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium. Throughout her career, she has also distinguished herself as Director-General of Administration at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with responsibilities in the areas of human resources, budget, information systems, security, and assets, as well as Director of the Agency for French Education Abroad, where she oversaw a global network of approximately 500 high schools.
With diplomatic experience in countries such as Jordan and Greece, and a background from Sciences Po Paris, where she earned degrees in History and Russian Language, the speaker will offer an in-depth perspective on the contemporary challenges of diplomacy in an increasingly complex international context.
The session will provide an opportunity for reflection and discussion on the role of diplomacy in light of current geopolitical dynamics.
