Francisco
Carballo-Cruz, professor at the Department of Economics of EEG and researcher
at the NIPE (Núcleo de Investigação em Políticas Económicas e Empresariais)
coordinated a study also developed with IVIE (Instituto Valenciano de
Investigaciones Económicas) on the economic impact generated in Portugal by
the Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona, which set up the Portuguese company “Irmãdona
Supermercados” to operate in the country. The study analyses the impact of the
company on the economy in terms of sales, income, employment and public revenue
in the period 2019 to 2022, quantifying not only the direct impacts, but also
the indirect and induced impacts generated by the company's activity along the
entire value chain.
The study
culminated in a report, which concluded that the economic, sectoral and
territorial impacts of Mercadona's activity in Portugal are beginning to be
significant and the expansion of the chain in the country will continue to
increase its importance.
