Luís Aguiar-Conraria, a professor of the Department of Economics and a researcher at the Centre for Research in Economic and Business Policies (NIPE) at the School of Economics and Management at the University of Minho, led the research team that carried out the study "Who Pays the Scratch Card" for the Portuguese government's Economic and Social Council (CES). The team also includes Professor Pedro Morgado, from the University of Minho's School of Medicine.
The presentation of this study took place on 19 September 2023 and was published by the CES with the aim of finding out about the levels of scratch card consumption among the Portuguese and the associated social problems. The first phase of the study concludes that scratch card consumption is more common among people on low incomes (400-664 euros per month) and that these people are 3.1 times more likely to be frequent gamblers than people earning more than 1500 euros per month. The study will have two more phases, both funded by CES.
