The introduction of new management models and tools in health care institutions is aimed at achieving greater flexibility, efficiency, and accuracy thus steering farther the functioning of the sector. The Master in Health Care Units Management intends to equip health professionals with comprehensive management skills, enabling them to intervene more effectively in the context of health public or private organisations​.​​

This master's program is part of the portfolio of courses in the University of Minho's Postgraduate Alliance project, which is the result of UMinho's application to the Impulso Adultos and Impulso Jovens Steam (PRR/NextGenerationEU) investments. In this context, merit scholarships will be awarded to full-time students who have passed all curricular units in the 1st and 2nd year - only students who are tax resident in Portugal at the time the course is funded and aged 18 or over can be considered. Description


The introduction of management models and tools in health care institutions is aimed at achieving greater flexibility, efficiency, and accuracy thus steering farther the functioning of the sector. The Master intends to equip health professionals with comprehensive management skills, enabling them to intervene more effectively in the context of health public or private organisations. By providing management training in its various areas, graduates will get a strategic and operational vision of organizations, be able to use theoretical knowledge and apply strategic management skills in managerial decision-making. They also are able to analyse complex data and think critically, as well as, to operate in cross-cultural multidisciplinary teams and act ethically and with integrity.

Key learning outcomes


1. To disseminate knowledge in the various functional areas of Management
2. To stimulate critical thinking and reasoned opinions based on the prevailing Management of Health Services conceptual models
3. To increase awareness about the specificities and particular challenges of management in health care
4. To stimulate critical thinking and data driven decision making in health care organisations

6. To stimulate business ethics and social responsibility in health care organisations
7. To enhance scientific research in the various fields of Management of Health Services

Access to higher education


Masters in Health Care Units Management are qualified to start a Ph.D. in Management or related fields.

Careers


Graduates in Business and Management are qualified to pursue a career in management and its functional areas (namely, finance, corporate strategy, accounting, organizational behavior and human resources, marketing and operations management), in a variety of health care organizations (public and private, national and international, profit and non-profit).

Formal requirements


The entry requirements comply with the Portuguese legislation. Students can apply for this Master's course if they are:
a) Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent in any area;
b) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of studies organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher academic degree that is recognized as meeting the objectives of the degree by the Scientific Council of the School of Economics and Management;
d) Holders of a school, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the School of Economics and Management.
