Odd Rune
Straume, full professor at the Department of Economics and researcher at the
Research Center for Economic and Business Policies (NIPE) at the School of
Economics and Management at the University of Minho (EEG), is the new editor of
the most renowned journal in the field of health economics.
For the next
three years, Odd Rune Straume will hold the position of editor of the Journal
of Health Economics in addition to his teaching and research post at EEG.
"This journal has 12 editors and a long list of so-called associate
editors. I had been an associate editor of the journal for some years. Last
September, when the time came to review the composition of the team, I was
invited to take on the role of editor for three years from 2024," he says.
One of the main
tasks of an edit or is reviewing papers. "This journal receives a large
number of submissions every year. These are then assigned to editors according
to the research profiles that best suit them," explains the researcher.
Although this is
a time-consuming job, the professor says he is very happy with the invitation.
"This is a very prestigious position, which follows on from the research
I've been doing. So I was happy to accept," he admits.
Straume is
Norwegian and has been in Portugal since 2006. He has a special interest in
health economics from a somewhat specific perspective. "I don't consider
myself a health economist. I find the healthcare, pharmaceutical and hospital
markets interesting from an Industrial Economics point of view," he
reflects.
His theoretical
research is the result of this interest. Looking at the pharmaceutical
industry, he has tried to understand how we can stimulate innovation and the
production of new drugs, while ensuring that the prices of these drugs are
affordable.
